Art Behind Bars

Authors: 15 Belarusian artists who are or were imprisoned; Supolka and Viasna
Dates: 15 June – 14 July 2025

On 15 June 2024, the New East cultural space in Daugavpils opened Art Behind Bars — a powerful exhibition showcasing drawings and graphic works created by Belarusian political prisoners. These artworks, part of the collection from the human rights organization Viasna, go far beyond mere artistic expression — they are profound testimonies of inner freedom, resilience, and the struggle to maintain humanity under extreme oppression.

The works reveal how creativity becomes a lifeline for those imprisoned for their political beliefs — a vital form of self-preservation and communication from within isolation. Through raw and intimate imagery, the exhibition gives voice to those silenced by an authoritarian regime, reminding viewers of the enduring values of justice, dignity, and freedom.

Previously exhibited in the Saeima building in Riga, the exhibition has received significant recognition and support from prominent figures, including Belarusian democratic leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Heléne Björklund, Chair of the Nordic Council.

Public Program

The opening event featured the premiere of the theatrical performance Baptized by the Latvian Protest Theatre, telling the story of Valentin Štermer — a Belarusian political prisoner who tragically died behind bars. This powerful piece enriched the exhibition’s narrative, deepening the audience’s emotional connection to the human cost behind the artworks.

Art Behind Bars is not just an exhibition; it is a solemn reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of repression. It amplifies the voices of those fighting for freedom and invites reflection on the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights.
